The “Almost-Summer” Strategy: Why a Trip to Indy is the 2026 Season Opener You Need

Let’s be honest: by the time May rolls around, “parent burnout” is a real thing. We’re all looking for that one magic bullet—an experience that is educational enough to justify the trip, but exciting enough that the kids actually stop looking at their phones.

If you’re currently mapping out your summer, there’s a new “North Star” on the map, and it’s in the heart of the Midwest.

While the theme parks are bracing for record crowds, a brand-new, world-class experience has landed in the Midwest. On March 7, 2026, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis made history by opening the first-ever exhibition dedicated entirely to Disney’s Princess Tiana. If you think you know the story of Princess Tiana, think again. According to the team at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, her journey is a trilogy: “The first chapter is the movie, the second chapter is the ride, and this is the third chapter.” This isn’t just a “look-but-don’t-touch” display. It is a full-throttle, interactive journey into the heart of New Orleans, developed in collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering.

The Mission: Bring Your “Special Spice”

The exhibit picks up exactly where the movies (and the new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attractions) leave off. Tiana is throwing a massive Mardi Gras celebration for her community, and she needs your help to get the party started.

As a National Correspondent by trade but a Mom first, I’m always on the hunt for that rare “overlap”—where genuine fun meets actual growth. This exhibit is exactly that. It doesn’t just show Princess Tiana; it uses her story to teach teamwork, entrepreneurship, and tradition through the lens of one of Disney’s most grounded and hardworking heroes. It’s a masterclass in showing our kids that “dreaming big” is only the beginning—it’s the “special spice” of hard work and community that actually brings those dreams to life.

The “Must-Do” Checklist

  • Design the Parade: Put your creative skills to the test by decorating Mardi Gras floats and designing custom masks and costumes.
  • The Flavor Lab: Step into the kitchen to “make gumbo” and learn how Tiana’s legendary flavors bring people together.
  • Join the Band: Rehearse with the neighborhood band and learn a traditional New Orleans dance to perform during the joyful celebration.
  • Imagineering Magic: Because Disney Imagineers helped produce this, the attention to detail—from the sounds of the French Quarter to the vibrant textures of the costumes—is unparalleled.

The Quick Facts for Travelers

  • Dates: March 7, 2026 – January 3, 2027.
  • Location: The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The World’s Largest!

Why Indy? Why Now?

Indianapolis is often called the “Crossroads of America,” making it an easy weekend drive for millions. But the real draw is the museum itself. Spanning nearly 500,000 square feet, it’s a powerhouse of education.

This exhibit is deeply rooted in authenticity. The team worked closely with Stella Chase Reese, daughter of the legendary Leah Chase (the real-life inspiration for Tiana), to ensure the spirit of New Orleans is captured perfectly. It’s a masterclass in teaching excellence, determination, and community through play.

By visiting this summer, you’re catching the debut chapter of Tiana’s new story. It’s an immersive celebration of Black heritage and the “never-give-up” spirit that Tiana represents.

The Verdict

You can still have the ‘Disney Experience’ without the Florida humidity. If you want a summer memory that sticks, head to Indy. Help Tiana prepare the parade, taste the (imaginary) gumbo, and let your kids discover that their own “special spice” is exactly what the world needs! As always, tell them TotallyRandie sent you!
