Poetry on a Gloomy Saturday

Edgar Allan Poe has always been my favorite poet & one of my favorite writers. His darkness mirrored my own, his pain danced with my emotions. The way he loved held conversations with my heart. His work embodied all four literary conflicts, and sometimes all four were found in one piece: Man VS. Man, Man VS. Society, Man VS. Nature, and of course Man VS. Self.

I hadn’t written poetry in a while. Today my chest felt like it was going to explode if I didn’t release some of these thoughts. So here’s my attemp to regurgitate emotions on paper.

“I woke up in a nightmare
Trapped inside my own skin.
On my mark, get set, go
Dear God I hope I win.

One mistake led to two
Two to twenty and more
Living in this body
Has my mind, body, and soul sore

So I paint a smile on my face
Dress the part I play.
Dodging life’s blows
Trying to stay out of my own way.

But something is still wrong
Something I can clearly see
When I lay down at night
There’s no running away from me.”
